John Yoo, MBA
Chief Executive Officer
President and Professor, VUIM
John Yoo serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Virginia University of Integrative Medicine (VUIM), a private, non-profit institution of higher education dedicated to training healthcare practitioners in Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and the principles of whole person health.
Since April 2019, John has led a significant expansion of VUIM’s academic and clinical footprint, growing the University from a single campus to three locations: its flagship campus in Tysons, Virginia, and satellite campuses in Ridgefield, New Jersey, and Duluth, Georgia. VUIM has also expanded its off-campus clinical training through sites at Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and major comprehensive cancer hospitals, including INOVA Schar Cancer Institute.
Accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (ACAHM), VUIM now offers Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, with programs available in English, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese. This growth reflects the University’s strong commitment to diversity, global engagement, and accessible education in integrative medicine.
In addition to his role as CEO, John has served on VUIM’s Board of Trustees since 2010 and currently serves as an Ex-Officio member. He also holds leadership roles in several national organizations dedicated to advancing Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine. He currently serves as Board Chair and Executive Committee member of ACAHM, where he helps define and support high standards for Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine education.
John is also Treasurer and Board Member of the Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR), a leading organization promoting evidence-based acupuncture research and collaboration worldwide. Through SAR, he supports initiatives that strengthen research methods, investigate mechanisms of action, and mentor future leaders in Integrative Medicine and Whole Person Health.
He also represents VUIM as a member of the Coalition for Whole Person Health, working alongside the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to advocate for patient-centered, research-informed, interprofessional care.
Prior to his work in higher education, John led business development and product management at Arca Solutions Inc., where he redefined global sales strategies and launched a mobile-first division targeting the global print publishing industry. He also held leadership roles at Kaplan Inc.’s K–9 division in San Francisco, contributing to the development of technology-driven, blended learning models.
John holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia. He is also a proud member of the Council of Korean Americans (CKA), a national nonprofit organization that advances the voice, visibility, and influence of the Korean American community through advocacy, leadership development, and civic engagement.
